Boom Boom knocks out BonillaBy Rey Danseco, Manila TimesTHEY don’t call Rey Bautista “Boom Boom” for nothing.Living up to his explosive monicker anew, the hard-hitting Bautista remained unbeaten on Saturday (Sunday morning in Manila) after knocking out Roberto “El Chucky” Bonilla of Nicaragua in the third round before 10,617 fans at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.Bautista decked Bonilla with a combination of a straight punch to the body, followed up by a left hook to end the fight two minutes and 36 second into the third of their scheduled 10-round junior featherweight match.Referee Pat Russell took one look at the glassy-eyed Bonilla and then declared Bautista, a protégé of Cebu boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer, the winner by technical knockout. With Freddie Roach, also the trainer of Pinoy ring icon Manny Pacquiao, in his corner, Bautista improved his menacing record to 20 wins, with 15 knockouts.Bonilla absorbed his second straight loss and dropped to 22-8.Bautista will next prepare for a non-title fight on July 2 in the undercard of Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios bout for the WBC international super featherweight title at Araneta Coliseum. After the fight, reigning WBC light middleweight champ Oscar De La Hoya congratulated Bautista and Bonilla, posing between the two boxers atop the ring. The Bautista-Bonnila bout served as one of the preliminaries in the championship match pitting reigning WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera against American challenger Rocky Juarez.Meanwhile, RP champion Dondon Sultan knocked out previously unbeaten Russian Anton Solopov in the opening round to capture the Pan Asian Boxing Association welterweight title Saturday at the Energetik Sports Complex in Surgut, Russia.Sultan’s victory was his first in two attempts in PABA diadem after the 5-foot-6 orthodox figher from Cebu lost by unanimous decision over 12 rounds to Thai Parkpoom Jangphonak in October 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand.
